How to Open a Bank Account in Malaysia as a Student
Recommended Banks
- Maybank: The largest bank. Best mobile app (MAE) and ATMs are everywhere.
- CIMB: Very student-friendly and easy to open.
- Bank Islam: Great for those who strictly want Shariah-compliant banking without mixing funds.
Documents You Need
You CANNOT open an account with just a passport. You must bring:
1. Original Passport
2. Student Verification Letter (from your Uni)
3. Offer Letter
4. Minimum Deposit (usually RM 250)
Wise (Transferring Money)
We highly recommend setting up a Wise account. It allows your parents to send money from home to your Malaysian bank account with much lower fees than traditional swift transfers.
